Shade Covered Bridge

Shade Covered Bridge

At one time, the property boasted Shade Covered Bridge.  It was first built in 1871 by James Buchanan using the Burr Arch truss (some references say it was a multiple kingpost truss with arches added at a later date) and was 127′ long plus overhangs at each end.

In the early 1980s, Bill Pierson received permission from a County engineer to take the Shade and prevent it being destroyed at that time.  With the help of his family and friends, he moved it to the property.  For many years, it was used by the Pierson family as a museum of sorts, housing a large personal collection of memorabilia.  He gave the bridge an additional 35-plus years of life it would not have had otherwise.

Hummel Covered Bridge

Hummel Covered Bridge

The Hummel bridge was built in 1865 by Smith Bridge Company using the Smith truss with arches; it was 104′ long plus 6′ overhangs at each end. It was moved and a small portion of it (approximately 15’) was reconstructed in the late 1990s to this property, also by Bill Pierson and family. Not much is known of its original history. Thanks to Mr. Pierson’s efforts, it also received an extension of life.

In 2022, both bridges had to be demolished.  Read more about Hummel Covered Bridge.
