Adopt-A-Park

With pride, we admit we have some of the most beautiful and unique parks!

Cross Mound Park boasts the only-known earthwork of its kind, Cross Mound, also a rare WPA Pedestrian Bridge.  Stebelton Park at Rock Mill showcases Rock Mill, one of the best examples of a working gristmill from the mid-1800s and the iconic Rock Mill Covered Bridge.  And we must mention the other beautifully restored covered bridges.

Why Such a Program is Needed

Keeping such treasures clean and in good condition for others to enjoy takes a lot of time!  Our small staff cannot keep up with all the work necessary to repair and maintain structures, parking areas, walkways and trails, and the like.  It is a sad but true statement that a great number of work hours are spent just picking up trash left by thoughtless people.

There is a group of volunteers who are invaluable to us.  They do help with cleaning but are also focused on assisting staff during educational programs and events.  The Adopt-a-Park program allows a community group to take a vested interest in a particular park to keep it clean, safe and beautiful for everyone to enjoy all year long.

Who Can Adopt-a-Park

Any group of at least six or more people such as a neighborhood or athletic association, civic or scouting organizations, youth or church groups, businesses, friends and family groups, can apply to adopt-a-park.  Unless the group is a scouting or youth group with a responsible adult always in attendance, group members must be at least 18 years of age.

What It Involves

The adopters agree to commit to caring for a particular park or other Fairfield County Park District location for a minimum two-year period.  During that time, they agree to complete a total of 400 hours on whatever task is agreed upon for that.  Examples:  1) if six people worked together three hours a month they would have put in a total of 216 hours a year, or; 2) if eight people worked as a group 2.5 hours a month, they would have worked 240 hours a year.

When a group adopts a park, the Volunteer Coordinator and/or the Operations Supervisor will work with the members to establish what work is to be accomplished, set a schedule, and provide any necessary training or instructions.  We will keep in communication to make this program as enjoyable as possible for each of us!

Acknowledgements

After 100 hours have been completed, a sign with the volunteer group’s name will be placed either at the park location, if appropriate, or at the main office.  The group will also be mentioned in the e-newsletter, on this website and on our Facebook page.
