Park Features

Turkey Run Church

Turkey Run Church

The main feature of this park is Turkey Run Church. For a long time the congregation did not have a building of its own but met in a nearby schoolhouse. Using bricks that were made on site, a church was finally built and dedicated in 1835.  Members held meetings in this building until 2001.

It is said that when the church was dedicated, more than 500 people were in attendance. Because the church can hold only 80 people services were held outside. By 2000, the congregation had dwindled to only three people. They gave the property to Fairfield County Parks in 2000 and held their last meeting in 2001.

Turkey Run Cemetery

Turkey Run Cemetery

Taphophiles will appreciate Turkey Run Cemetery! This graveyard has many broken tombstones but the artistry can easily be seen in their remains. Names of early Fairfield County settlers can be found. One such person is Tunis Peters (1759-1839), a founding member of the Turkey Run Church congregation.

The cemetery predates the organization of the church. The oldest burial recorded on the stones are 1812, 1813 and 1815.  Vandals have broken grave markers and have even drug some of them into the nearby woods where they have been hidden from view.
